Mission Reports

385th BGA

This section contains summaries of each combat mission flown by the 385th BG including number of aircraft, losses and related MACRs, if any, and, in some cases, additional information related to that mission. The source for these summaries is copies of original documents from the Maxwell AFB Archives.

Mission No. 1 – 17 July – Target Amsterdam – 21 a/c flown.

Led by Lt. Col. Vandevanter, 21 of our ships set out for Nazi works in Amsterdam early this morning, and 21 ships returned, some slightly damaged by flak.  Unfortunately, a heavy overcast prevented dropping bombs on the target.

Mission No. 2 – 24 July – Target Bergen – 21 a/c flown.

The mission objective was to demolish submarine pens in Norway. Major Preston Piper led 21 Fortresses over the target, and again a thick overcast prevented dropping the bombs.

Mission No. 3 – 25 July – Target Warnemunde – 28 a/c flown.
The mission objective was the fighter plant at Warnemunde, near Rostock – and not far from Berlin. .Led by Lt. Col. Vandevanter, the bombs were salvoed but Col. Vandevanter wasn’t entirely satisfied, because was sure that the intended targets hit.  Overcast entirely obscured the target again. Despite some helliaious flak and fighter opposition, all returned safely..

Mission No. 4 – 26 July – Target Wesermunde – 21 a/c flown.

Three aircraft were lost.  Duncan, 42-30281, ditched in the North Sea, all 10 were KIA, MACR 191A. Harris, 42-5895 also ditched in the North Sea, 4 were KIA, 6 POW’s, MACR 191B. (Major Springfield was flying in Lt. Harris* ship.) Daniel, 42-30279, Black Jacker, crashed in Germany, 7 KIA, 3 POW, MACR 191C. The targets were Hanover and Wesermunde. Led by Captain McDonald, 21 of Fortresses left for the mission. Unpredicted weather conditions – heavy clouds, etc – partially broke up the formation over the continent and there followed what some described as one of the worst and hardest aerial battles to date. Gunners claimed 15 fighters downed, 8 “probable” and 9 damaged.

Mission No. 5 – 28 July – Target Oschersleben – 26 a/c flown.

Another hard day. Our target was Oschersleben. Colonel Vandeventer led our Group formation of 21 ships; five others from our Group went with a composite unit.

97% of all bombs fell within 1000 ft. of the target.

Gurgel, 42-30179, Grim Reaper, crashed in Germany, 4 KIA, 6 POW, MACR 189A. Outbound over the North Sea. Robbins in Lady Susie II, 42-30257, collided with Storr in Betty Boom, 42-3316, and Noel in Round Trip Ticket, 42-30285. MACR’s 189B, C, D. Robbins crashed into the North Sea killing all onboard. Radio operator T/Sgt. Walter T. Reep was found washed ashore by Police constable K. Mouritsen on the beach near Bjerregaard, Denmark on 21 Sept. and was laid to rest in Fovrfelt cemetery in Esbjerg on 27 Sept. 1943. On 30 Apr. 1948 the body was disinterred and taken to the US Military Cemetery Neuville-en-Condron in Belgium. Here can also be found the graves of Storr, Top Turret Gunner T/Sgt. Harry L. McComb, Ball Turret Gunner Sgt. Joseph T. Schipani, Left Waist Gunner S/Sgt. Arthur J. Spicas and Right Waist Gunner S/Sgt. James F. McDonough. But Co-pilot 2nd Lt. Robert P. Blakely, Navigator 2nd Lt. Clinton A. Weaver, Bombardier 2nd Lt. Athel J. Miller and Tail Gunner S/Sgt. James R. Murphy all now rest in the USA.

Mission No. 6 – 29 July – Target Warnemunde – 16 a/c flown.

Captain Richard led what Lt. Col. Vandevanter has called our most successful mission to date. We went to the fighter factory at Warnemunde again, and we doubt that there’ll ever be occasion to go there again. The plant that was there early this morning, tonight Is a smoking ruin. Superbombing led by Captain Ross, coupled with excellent evasive maneuvers on the part of Captain Richard brought all of our bombing planes home; the crews are well and happy. Grodi. 42-30270, The Old Shillelagh, ditched and all were recovered safely.

Mission No. 7 – 30 July – Target Kassel – 17 a/c flown.

Seven of our ships led by Captain Benner went out, but mechanical troubles caused five to abort. The Fortresses piloted by Lts. Dixon and Gregg, however, completed the mission.

5 a/c aborted, 7 attached to another Group.

Mission No. 8 – 12 August – Target Bonn. 21 a/c flown

Captain McDonald led the Group today. Captain Lewis went along as an observer. All twenty-one a/c returned without casualties. The principal target was a large 100 – octane gasoline reflnerv in Wesseling. but overcast prevented hitting that target. Instead our bombs were well dropped on the secondary target, the town of Bonn, near Cologne.

Mission No. 9 – 15 August – Target Vitry En Artois – 21 a/c flown.

Stone, 42-30598, ditched in the English Channel, 10 KIA, MACR 267.

Sommers, 42-5886, The Jolly Roger, crashed in Belgium, 6 KIA, 3 POW, 1 evaded capture, MACR 387A.

Keeley in 42-3388, Sleepytime Girl, ditched in the Mediterranean Sea, the emergency radio was damaged and useless but Sam Rochester, the radio operator, and Lt. Keeley were the only ones who knew that. Sam kept operating the radio as if it were working for the morale of the others. The crew was rescued after about 24 hours spending the night in the dinghy. They returned to England.

The 385th BG as part of the 4th Bombardment Wing, earned its first Distinguished Unit Citation for this shuttle mission as later specified in General Orders 36, War Dept. 1 May 1944. This was the less-than-successful shuttle mission flying from Great Ashfield, to the target, then on to Telergma, in North Africa to land. Conditions and support facilities in North Africa left much to be desired. Shuttle logistics were a nightmare. Not enough material or correct personnel were available to properly service the aircraft. Shuttle missions were never repeated.

Mission No. 11 -1 9 August – Target Woensdrecht – 6 a/c flown.

Six of our ships, led by Captain Tesla, went with a composite group to bomb a Nazi airfield in Belgium late this afternoon, but heavy cloud formations over both the principal and secondary targets prevented bombing, and all returned with their bombs. Aside from some flak and a few enemy fighters sighted (Lt. Meyer of Lt. Binks’ crew knocked down one of them) the mission was particularly eventful.

Mission No. 12 – 24 August – Target Bordeaux – 13 a/c flown.

This was the return leg of the African Shuttle, Mission 10.

Grodi, 42-30364, Old Shillelagh II, crashed in France, 3 KIA, 6 evaded capture, MACR 395.

Masters 42-30187, Lulu Belle, ditched in the Atlantic Ocean, 4 KIA, 8 rescued; MACR 961.

Mission No. 13 – 24 August – Target Conches – 6 a/c flown.

Flown at the same time as No. 12. Led by Captain Riva, flying with Lt. Dixon, it was intended as a diversion for the Shuttle return flight. They flew with a composite group and bombed an airfield in France.

Mission No. 14 – 27 August – Target Watten – 12 a/c flown.

Major McDonald, flying with Captain Binks, led our Group. Overcast prevented our bombing. All returned safely.

Mission No. 15 – 6 September – Target Dieppe – 21 a/c flown.

Colonel Vandevanter led a long raid into Germany. Battery works at Stuttgart were the target. Dense overcast, however, prevented dropping bombs. On the way back, an airfield near Dieppe.

Mission No. 16 – 7 September – Target Watten – 21 a/c flown.

As the aircraft were approaching the field for a landing at about 5300 feet, Keeley’s plane was hit from the rear by Yanello who was blinded by frost on his windshield. Dorsal Queen lost its tail and Raunchy Wolf lost its left wing. They crashed in England at Thornton and Bulphen, respectively. There was only one survivor, John J. Adams, the Tail Gunner on Yanello’s crew, who bailed out. All bodies were recovered. There is no MACR as neither crew was missing.

Col. Vandevanter, flying with Captain Masters and his crew, led the mission.  A target of opportunity, near the port, was bombed.

Mission No. 23 – 2 October – Target Emden – 26 a/c flown.

Major Richard, flying with Captain Jacques, led our Group. We had two alternatives -either to do precision bombing if the target was visible, or bomb by use of Pathfinder if precision bombing was impossible. Heavy overcast, completely obscuring the target, forced us to bomb with the Pathfinder, but our effectiveness was undetermined. All a/c returned.

Mission No. 24 – 4 October – Target St. Dizier – 25 a/c flown.

The Group formation consisted of 21a/c. An additional 4 flew with a  composite group. Nine ships aborted because of mechanical trouble, including the a/c. Captain Klein, flying with Captain Masters, took over the lead and went on to bomb an airfield and marshalling yards at St. Dizier. Opposition to the group formation was rather light, but the composite group encountered fierce fighter attacks.. Lt.
